Newcastle Nomads kicked off their journey as a brand new futsal club last week in the inaugural season of the NNSWF Futsal Championship. Fielding teams in each of the categories, Nomads are a founding club and there were some bright signs for the youngsters.
The under-13s boys scored first but went down to Newcastle Grammar School in a close encounter before the 15s suffered a similar fate against the Singleton Strikers. The girls didn’t start until week two and the 13s girls narrowly missed out on a win against Central Coast Barbarians – leading 2-1 close to the end of the game but an injury to the goalkeeper put a dampener on the match and the Barbarians turned it around to win 3-2.
The boys went into round 2 with an injury problem of their own and suffered a heavy defeat to Hunter Valley Sharks in the 15s, while the 13s couldn’t hold off against Stockton Sharks.
The highlight of the fortnight came when the 15s girls saw off a challenge from Lake Macquarie City with a five goal flurry in the final ten minutes in what had been a close game until that point.
Head coach Gui Evangelista reflected: “It’s been a great start really, with lots of new players and very little training as a team, but we are so happy to be playing regular, quality games so I am sure we’ll see the players improve quickly.”
RESULTS
- U13 Boys: Newcastle Grammar 7-4 Nomads
- U15 Boys: Singleton Strikers 15-5 Nomads
- U13 Boys: Nomads 6-8 Stockton Sharks
- U13 Girls: Central Coast Barbarians 3-2 Nomads
- U15 Boys: Nomads 2-15 Hunter Sharks
- U15 Girls: Nomads 10-4 Lake Macquarie City
Most of the games have been close and competitive and it’s only going to get better from here for the new club.
“Results aren’t important now. What is important is we create a positive environment and more and more children play futsal. We want our teams to gain confidence and play in the right way and with a smile on their faces!” said Gui.
